The Pintona dollar is the national currecy of Pintona. It is sub-divided into 100 cents. The dollar is pegged at 2.5 for 1 US dollar. The official symbol is $, but PT$ is used to avoid confusion with other dollars.
The Spanish Piece of Eight was the old currency used for many years. British Pounds were used from the 1860's onward. The Pintona Pound was the currency until 1946 and afterward it was the British West Indies dollar. In 1965 the Pintona Dollar replaced the West indies $. The PT$ to US$ rate was 1:1. Devalaution caused it to become 2:1 in 1969 and now 2.5:1 since 1990.
The coins in circulation are 5, 10, 25 cents and $1. The Cent stopped being made in 1990 but is still used, but rarely.
