The Pintonan dollar is the national currency of Pintona. It is subdivided into 100 cents. The dollar is pegged at 2.5 for 1 US dollar. The official symbol is $, but PT$ is used to avoid confusion with other dollars.
The Spanish Piece of Eight was the currency used for many years. British pounds were used from the 1860s onward. The Pintonan pound and the British West Indies dollar were the nation's currency until 1945 and 1965 respectively. In 1965, the Pintonan dollar replaced the West Indies dollar. The PT$ to US$ rate was 1:1. Devaluation caused it to become 2:1 in 1969 and 2.5:1 in 1990.
The coins in circulation are 5, 10 and 25 cents and 1 dollar.
